E2Designlab were engaged to work in partnership with VicRoads to develop their water sensitive road design strategy and to review existing performance of built designs. A fully collaborative project was used to understand existing procedures, roles and design standards, including:
- site visits with VicRoads Staff
- interviews with project managers of past projects
- workshops with cross-departmental representatives
- mapping of inter-agency collaboration needs with with external stakeholders.
The team looked at the barriers and opportunities from conception to delivery and then to ongoing maintenance requirements - to determine how best community outcomes could be delivered, and therefore when, where and why to invest effort.
Design curves were created for WSUD sizing on various road typologies to assist in planning level decision making. A full review was also conducted of past design reports including the Western Ring Road to understand the design process and verify the achievements of existing assets against VicRoads targets and aspirations. The team devised a template for future designs to utilise to easily record key information to aid the streamlining of future reporting.
Water Sensitive City Outcomes:
