Integrated Water Planning
Alternative water supplies

Alternative Water Planning for Greater Melbourne

DELWP and Greater Melbourne Urban Water Services Strategy Team

E2Designlab were engaged by the Water for Life (Greater Melbourne Urban Water Systems Strategy) team and DELWP to deliver a time-critical piece of work to enable the consideration of potential alternative water supplies as core water resources for Melbourne’s future. A key strategy to deliver the region’s IWM targets. We brought together a range of existing and concurrent studies and worked closely with water authorities across the region to identify, cost and quantify the expected impact of alternative water projects to 2070. These included recycled water, rainwater and stormwater projects at both a local and regional scale.  A comprehensive project data base was developed and sorted into portfolios to represent ‘low’ and ‘high’ delivery projections which could be integrated into the supply-demand modelling for the Water for Life strategy, enabling alternative water to be considered alongside other supply augmentation options. The work was accompanied by a compelling narrative for inclusion in the strategy. The work also mapped the performance of the projects against the 2030 and 2050 IWM targets developed for the Catchment-Scale IWM Plans, this is to help to map a pathway forward to deliver the shared outcomes for stakeholders in the region. It is a cornerstone piece for future action planning.

Benefits to client:

  • comprehensive engagement with stakeholders to meet tight deadlines
  • clear communication and visual representations of possible projects and their benefits
  • development of a compelling narrative to make the case for alternative water as part of the long-term water strategy for Melbourne
  • flexible approach to project scope to cater to multiple client needs and focuses.
