E2Designlab analysed current and future patterns in water use and potential demands to provide greatly enhanced insight and understanding of future infrastructure needs. A range of options were investigated through a rapid assessment framework and the potential costs, benefits and risks of servicing the towns using local and external sources were evaluated in economic, quantitative and qualitative terms.
The outcomes of the project illustrated the benefits of detailed analysis of data to understand real demands and available supplies and the critical importance of considering timing and sensitivity for major infrastructure projects in areas with long development timeframes. The explicit identification of costs, benefits and risks provided decision-makers with an understanding of the differences in life-cycle costs and potential trade-offs between the various options.
Water Sensitive City Outcomes:
- alternative water supply
- integrated water management
- planning for growth
