Northland Redevelopment Area Concept Design
Yarra Valley Water, City of Darebin Council, Office of Living Victoria, Melbourne Water
The Northland Principal Activity Area in Preston has been identified for urban renewal, changing a predominantly commercial and light industrial area to a mixed use community hub. Given that change is expected to occur incrementally over the next 15 years, it was important that the integrated water strategy anticipated future water management requirements while also being flexible in its delivery model.
A series of typical development typologies were tested against a range of integrated water management targets to identify cost-effective and highly beneficial solutions at both a lot and precinct scale. Due to the efficiencies of scale, the development of a strategic stormwater harvesting system that could provide non-potable water to both local green space and new development areas was shown to provide the greatest cost-benefit, providing a local and affordable opportunity for developers to meet future targets. A comprehensive set of planning recommendations were made to instil the vision in local policy.
