E2Designlab led the development of the IWM Plans for the five major catchments in the Metropolitan Melbourne region on behalf of the IWM Forums, who bring together representatives from all councils, water retailers, catchment managers, registered aboriginal parties and other key stakeholders in the areas. A collaborative mechanism to establish a shared case for action, the IWM Plans bring firstly bring together a wealth of knowledge and data to establish the ‘current state’ of the water cycle across the catchments, before then projecting forward two future cases for 2030 and 2050; a ‘reference case’ which represents a business-as-usual approach and a ‘desired state’ which represents the stakeholder ambitions for the catchment.
This is a keystone project for Melbourne which allow industry to measure progress towards a comprehensive set of indicators across the seven strategic outcomes identified for IWM in the five catchments. It sets clear targets for action and provides a framework for assessing potential projects and identifying priority areas spatially. The project creates data at a sub-catchment and local government area scale, allowing areas to be cross-compared thereby creating place-based strategies for change. The IWM Plans were releases mid 2021.
